Sein "HalloweenDer Film aus dem Jahr 2018, der die legendäre Vorlage von John Carpenter fortsetzte, war ein Hit. Ist jetzt "Halloween-Mata“ kommt in die Kinos und macht dem Titel des Films alle Ehre: Die Blutspur, die der maskierte Michael Myers durch die Kleinstadt Haddonfield zieht, war noch nie so lang. Aber war diese Fortsetzung wirklich notwendig?
FILMBEGINN: David, nach deinem Halloween-Film 2018 hatte ich zwei Gedanken. Der erste Gedanke war: Das ist der beste Film des Jahres! Der zweite Gedanke war: Diese Szene mit dem Feuer am Ende ist ein perfekter Abschluss der Geschichte von Michael Myers und Laurie Strode. Warum haben Sie also nach diesem Film nicht aufgehört und stattdessen eine ganze Trilogie gemacht?
David Gordon Green:Die Motivation war: Ich hatte viel Spaß und es war ein großer kommerzieller Erfolg. Das hatte ich noch nicht oft gesehen. Ich habe viele Filme gemacht, die mir Spaß gemacht haben, aber niemand hat sie gesehen. In den 20 Jahren meiner Karriere war es wirklich frustrierend, Menschen dazu zu bringen, meine Filme zu sehen. Jetzt habe ich endlich ein großes Publikum erreicht. Ich werde hier nicht aufhören!
Stellen Sie sich vor, Sie beobachten, wie die Leute Schlange stehen, um Ihren Film zu sehen, und dann während der Vorführung von ihren Sitzen aufspringen. Als unabhängiger Filmemacher wollte ich immer, dass sich mehr Menschen für meine seltsamen Geschichten interessieren. FILMBEGINN: Die Morde in seinem 2018 erschienenen Film „Halloween“ und insbesondere „Halloween Kills“ sind weitaus grausamer als im Original von John Carpenter und den alten Fortsetzungen. Warum haben Sie sich für mehr Gewalt entschieden?
David Gordon Green:Eigentlich habe ich das nicht versucht und es hat nicht funktioniert.
FILMANFANG: Nein.
David Gordon Green:Ich liebe John Carpenters Filme wegen ihrer Subtilität, Zurückhaltung und Spannung. Die Morde dort sind einfach genial, ohne grausam und grotesk zu sein. Wie auch immer, als wir den neuen Film drehten, war der Meister-Maskenbildner und Effektkünstler Chris Nelson dabei. Dann sitzt man im Schnittraum und denkt: Wir können nicht einfach jemandem die Augen ausstechen, Jason wollte das, aber Michael wollte nicht, aber er war zu fasziniert davon.
Mein Redakteur und ich dachten, ok, dieser Tod wird brutal sein, aber beim nächsten werden wir subtiler vorgehen ... und bevor wir es wussten, war der ganze Film brutal. Und es fühlte sich gut an. Denken Sie nicht zu viel darüber nach. Ich habe einige Grundregeln aufgestellt und am Ende einige davon gebrochen. Das ist nur ein Teil der Geschichte. Ich habe eine Idee, verfolge sie, aber der Strom führt mich woanders hin. Und dieser Film erwies sich als viel brutaler, als ich erwartet hatte.
FILMBEGINN: Man könnte sagen, dass ...
David Gordon Green:Und der Film heißt nicht umsonst „Halloween Kills“. Bei diesem Titel weiß jeder, was ihn erwartet.
FILMBEGINN: Wie kommt man zu Tatorten? Sind sie im Drehbuch beschrieben oder passiert etwas spontan am Set?
David Gordon Green:Normalerweise stehen sie im Drehbuch, und manchmal habe ich die Idee schon lange im Kopf, zum Beispiel wollte ich in einem Film schon immer jemandem in die Achselhöhle stechen. Zumindest als Schriftsteller wissen wir, welche Figur wann sterben wird. Dann lesen wir mit der Kunstabteilung und dem Make-up-Team das Drehbuch und finden heraus, was Spaß machen würde. Normalerweise braucht man am Set nur ein oder zwei Takes, um es richtig hinzubekommen. Wir haben es dem Make-up-Team zu verdanken, dass diese Szenen in „Halloween Kills“ so gut aussehen.
„Halloween endet“ wird anders sein
FILMBEGINN: Meine nächste Frage wurde Ihnen wahrscheinlich schon gestellt: Können Sie mir etwas über „Halloween Ends“ erzählen?
David Gordon Green:Das Drehbuch ist fertig und ich habe es gerade an John Carpenter geschickt, um seine Kommentare zu erhalten. Was ich zur Geschichte sagen kann: Der Film spielt vier Jahre nach „Halloween Kills“, also im Premierenjahr 2022. Die Charaktere werden die Ereignisse von 1978 und 2018 und alles, was seitdem passiert ist, verarbeitet haben. Der Film ist etwas weniger angesiedelt und ich sehe den Film auf seltsame Weise als eine Coming-of-Age-Geschichte.
FILMANFANG: Aber es wird nicht das Ende sein, oder? Ich meine, der Film heißt „Halloween Ends“, aber es ist ein Horror-Franchise und wie Sie wissen, enden sie nie ...
David Gordon Green:John Carpenter hat es vorhin sehr treffend gesagt: Je mehr Filme Geld verdienen, desto mehr Geld wird verdient. (Lachen)
Der Film beginnt: Aber „Halloween endet“ wird das Ende Ihrer Geschichte sein, oder?
David Gordon Green:Ja, es war mir wichtig, meine Trilogie abschließen zu können. Ich konnte ein Vermächtnis hinterlassen, das ich ehren würde. Danach liegt es an anderen Filmemachern, die Mythologie weiterzuführen.
FILMANFANG: Wie haben Sie Dr. Loomis zum Flashback? Er sieht Donald Pleasence sehr ähnlich, aber das kann doch nicht sein, oder?
David Gordon Green:Das ist nicht Donald Pleasence, das ist unser Baukoordinator Tom Jones. Er war derjenige, der die Sets gebaut hat, und er sieht Donald Pleasence sehr ähnlich. Man kann heutzutage jemanden am Computer wiederbeleben, aber zum einen hatten wir nicht genug Geld und zum anderen hatten wir einen Baukoordinator, der Donald Pleasence sehr ähnlich sieht, wenn er sich die Haare schneidet und etwas Make-up aufträgt.

FILMANFANG: Weil Sie über das Geld sprechen: John Carpenter hatte damals nur ein sehr kleines Budget für seinen Film. Hatten Sie im Allgemeinen genug Geld oder können Sie nie genug Geld für einen Film haben?
David Gordon Green:Für mich geht es nicht um Geld, sondern um Zeit. Wir haben „Halloween Kills“ sieben Wochen lang über Nacht gedreht. Alle waren erschöpft und der Film war auch logistisch sehr schwierig: Es gab so viele Extras und Stunts und Gewalt und Feuer und Gebäudesprünge. All diese Dinge sind wirklich schwer zu tun. Ich sage mir immer, ich solle mich beherrschen, wenn ich schreibe, aber andererseits wäre es schade, eine gute Idee nicht umzusetzen. Zum Glück hatte ich ein starkes Team. Der Großteil dieses Films wurde in ein oder zwei Einstellungen gedreht. Wir drehten, was wir konnten, und machten dann weiter, was zu einigen heiklen Situationen im Schneideraum führte. Aber das gehört alles dazu.
FILMSTARTS: Und es gab noch ein weiteres großes Problem mit „Halloween Kills“: Der Film sollte eigentlich 2020 in die Kinos kommen, wurde aber wegen Corona auf 2021 verschoben. Konnten Sie dadurch etwas am Film verbessern oder haben Sie überhaupt nichts daran geändert?
David Gordon Green:Ich habe es nicht mehr berührt. Der Film wurde vor ein paar Wochen in Venedig uraufgeführt und es war das erste Mal seit über einem Jahr, dass ich ihn gesehen habe. Als ich die Interviews vor der Premiere durchgesessen habe, konnte ich mich manchmal nicht mehr ganz an die endgültige Fassung erinnern. Ich hatte keine Autorität mehr über meinen eigenen Film. Aber ich freue mich, dass die Theater jetzt wieder geöffnet haben und die Leute in die Theater zurückkehren. Ich liebe es, Horrorfilme vor Publikum anzuschauen, das kann nichts ersetzen.
FILMANFÄNGE: „Halloween“ war Ihr erster Horrorfilm. Wie haben Sie eigentlich gelernt, Horrorfilme zu machen?
David Gordon Green:Ich habe in meinem Leben viele Horrorfilme gesehen, sie studiert und immer wieder mit großem Aufwand versucht, selbst welche zu machen. An Halloween zu arbeiten war ein echtes Privileg, das mir sehr viel bedeutete. Also habe ich den Film von John Carpenter studiert und darüber nachgedacht, wie wir ein zeitgenössisches Publikum ansprechen könnten. Der Ton, die Geschwindigkeit und die Dramaturgie sind 40 Jahre später ein wenig anders, man kann nicht einfach wiederholen, was man damals gemacht hat, und ich würde es sowieso nicht tun, weil sie es damals meisterhaft gemacht haben.
FILMBEGINN: Ihre Trilogie ignoriert die „Halloween“-Fortsetzungen, aber gibt es alte „Halloween“-Fortsetzungen, die Ihnen gefallen?
David Gordon Green:Ich finde in jedem Halloween-Film etwas, das mir gefällt. Ich mag die Teile 2, 3 und 4 sehr. Sie sind wirklich unterschiedlich und wir konnten sie nicht in unsere Geschichte einbauen, weil sie nicht passten, aber als Fan des Franchise schaue ich sie mir gerne an.
